York Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and sexual health services
We're responsible for delivering long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) - the term used to describe birth control methods that help to prevent pregnancy after just one treatment - in York.
There are various different options for patients to choose from, including intrauterine devices (IUDs), emergency IUDs and subdermal implants. It’s important that patients are able to select the option that's right for their lifestyle.
LARC devices offer a number of benefits; they are easy to fit, more than 99 per cent effective in preventing pregnancy, discreet and long-lasting. Some also help with hormonal issues, such as heavy periods.
Patients are reminded that, although LARC will protect them against pregnancy, it will not protect them from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
