Paul's story
Paul, 66, works as a cleaner in York. He had his third heart attack in October 2022 and was rushed to hospital by his neighbour.
“It wasn’t so much the pain but dizziness, sickness and sweating. My phone was dead, so I also had a panic attack and it was my next-door neighbour who got me to hospital,” he explained.
He had a pacemaker fitted and now attends the Heart Failure clinics at Acomb Garth Community Care Centre for care and advice.
“It eases my mind to know that they know what they’re doing here. Having a heart attack makes you start to think about your life. The last one I had, I actually thought I was dying. So, having a pacemaker and the care I get here makes me happier knowing I’m going to live a bit longer – I’m only young!”
Paul has already attended the Heart Failure clinic for three half-hour appointments. He has his blood pressure and pulse checked, blood tests and medication checks.
“This place is a life changer – I thought I was dying so I do as I’m told by the staff here.
“It easier coming here and it’s handy to know there’s somewhere I can go to near me where they know what’s happening with me. I got an appointment in a couple of days and when I arrive I’m in quickly. I see a couple of people each time and everyone is so nice and I even got a cup of tea today!”
